The ULU Big Band is the flagship group for the University of London Jazz Society. Formed in Autumn 2002, the band consists of some of the best young jazz musicians in London and represents the majority of the individual University colleges. It receives expert tuition from Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra MD Pete Long and plays regular gigs in London, around England, and often tours abroad.
Their reputation for superb musicianship has allowed the Big Band to build on its early successes; they frequently appear at some of London’s most famous venues including the Bulls Head, frequently play for University of London College events, and accompanying swing dances. The band and jazz society continue to pick up awards, winning University of London Big Band of the Year in 2011 & 2012 and retaining its University of London Union Society of the Year award for the third year.
The band has become a focal point for both the University of London Jazz Society and much of the student jazz scene in London, with members, and the society as a whole, running spin-off niche groups (from jazz trios to funk bands to ska) to complement the central big band. We are currently recruiting for the 2014/2015 season, so if you’re interested in playing in a Big Band (see here), a small group, or just meeting some jazz musicians and getting cheap gig tickets, come along to the 2014 ULU Freshers’ Fayre and meet us, or simply drop us an email.
